Lottery Winners

Some of you may know we held an Original Artwork Lottery during Swindon Festival of Literature with 52 artworks donated by artists taking part in open studios, and some not taking part this year, but keen to support Twigs.
Last Saturday, Councillor Jane Milner-Barry took time off from door knocking and leaflet delivery, along with committee member Nancy Elliott, to help convert money in envelopes into raffle tickets which we then drew out of a hat. Here they are, working hard with biscuits:
We raised a fabulous £500 for Twigs which I'm hoping to present to Alan Holland at the NGS open day on Sunday 21 May 1-5pm. I compiled a list of the winners, and mostly was able to say whose work they had won, the winner appears on the left, and the artist whose work they won on the right. As you can see, frustratingly some people won more than one artwork, and we didn't win anything!!

How to Enter the Original Art Lottery

For the duration of the Swindon Festival of Literature we have original artworks, donated by Swindon Open Studios artists, and other very kind artists who are not taking part in SOS this year, displayed on the landing at the Swindon Arts Centre in Devizes Road. Festival Director Matt Holland has kindly allowed us to hold this Lottery during the Festival and is actively promoting it at the end of the talks. We are inviting people to enter the Lottery to enable them to have a chance of winning one of the artworks, and support the fabulous Twigs gardens beside Cheney Manor Garden Centre. I've copied a piece from their website:

'TWIGS Community Gardens are a colourful and vibrant set of gardens in the heart of Swindon. They are managed by TWIGS as a resource to give people who experience mental health problems the chance to regain confidence, self-esteem and to learn new skills. The gardens provide plenty of different ideas to take home to your own garden, along with plants and craft goods to enhance it.'

Lots of people have bought lottery tickets already, but if you haven't, here how to do it:
You will find small pay packet envelopes on the landing, and downstairs in reception, or you could use your own, if you can't get to the arts centre.
I hope these instructions make sense:
You put as many details about yourself as possible on the envelope before putting money in there so when you win you can be notified.
Having completed your envelope, you need to put it in the posting box in the reception area downstairs:
You can see the box behind the reception desk, and below a close up of the box
The draw will take place on the last day of the festival, and a list of names of those who have won will appear here and on the website.
If you would like to take part in the Lottery and don't live nearby, or can't visit the Arts Centre, then please visit the Swindon Open Studios website for an address to send a cheque, made payable to Swindon Open Studios to enter.
I've got a few photos of the boards onto which the artworks are screwed being attached to the walls to give you an idea what they look like.
Above and below Rachel and Tim fixing the boards to the wall
another one about to go up
And then some photos of the boards themselves

Everyone who enters has quite a good chance of winning.
Here's the poster adverting the Lottery:
I hope you can help make this a great success, and raise lots of money for the TWIGS

Dawn Chorus event 1 May 5.30am

The Dawn Chorus event in Lawn Woods, looking towards the sunrise, is a great start to the Swindon Festival of Literature. This is the 24th Festival of Literature. Here we are waiting for proceedings to start, I'm on the second row, so there are a few photos of people framing my photos. With over an hour of activities, it's difficult to decide whether to sit down and be devoured by midges, or to wander round watching form various standpoints and chat to people.
The event started with Jake the Juggler on a watering can, and then moved onto Danny on bagpipes.
and then there were fire jugglers
and Matt Holland, Festival Director came and opened the 24th festival of literature, and introduced us to Guiseppe a cockerel abandoned at Lower Shaw Farm, sadly not captured in any of my photos, but I've just found an excellent photo of him on the @Swinlitfestival Twitterpage, which I hope it's OK to use here, I'll put him below Matt
This excellent photo below of Guiseppe, was taken by Calyx Picture Agency, THE place to go for proper photographs,so much better than mine..
Cat's Pyjamas treated us to some fantastic acrobatics; I've included 3 photos to give you some idea of their range
Above getting onto her partner's head, and below, standing on his head
And a fabulous elastic move
There was also tap dancing, story telling, harmony singing and then the sun came out part way through proceedings.
The event ended with some more excellent juggling, and we went home to a long day at around 7.15am!!
A brilliant start to the festival and indeed to May, and the summer.

Twigs Spring Open Day

Twigs open day was held last Sunday 23 April, from 11am-4pm, I'd gone for garden inspiration from their 'show gardens' as I like to call them, and also to buy plants and meet up with friends.
Plants were selling fast so I went for the 6 plants for £10 option, choosing 12 rather than 6, before looking at anything else.
Above the plant sales area, and below a lovely bed with a woven fence around it, which I don't remember seeing before.
There's a lovely wild area which has lots of nectar rich flowers for bees
and as we know, it's been a very dry winter and especially dry April, the pond which has  a notice warning of deep water was little more than a slightly damp area.
A lovely pot planted with tulips below
 Some frilly edged tulips
 One of the gardens below
Kids activities  which seemed to be keeping them occupied
Below Euphorbia Fireglow looking amazingly wonderful, everyone says it's easy to grow, but mine has yet to establish properly.

Above some bunting looking lovely in the garden, and below an Auricula theatre with various
different flowering plants in it.
There are also some happy hens
Refreshments and entertainment in the courtyard
If you visit their website, you can see Twigs is a resource for people experiencing mental health problems, to give them confidence to move on wiht their lives.
Twigs is our chosen charity for the Original Art Lottery being held at the Arts Centre during the Swindon Festival of Literature.
Here's a copy of the poster which explains prices etc:
Please buy lots of tickets so we can raise lots of money for this wonderful charity.
